Bandleader Nick Hempton crossed his fingers when he moved to New York from his native Sydney within 2004, wishing the city’s insightful jazz clubs would instantly offer lots of chances to experience.
Instead, he struggled for months to get steady work. “I knew things i was getting myself in to,” Hempton, a 36- year-old saxophonist, said by phone. “It’s a genuine hustle as well as struggle since there are lots of musicians in New York, but I understood it was the place I wanted to remain.”
Things got better when Hempton discovered Music for Tomorrow, a New York-based nonprofit that helps jazz music artists find function. In Dec, the charity booked Hempton’s music group to perform at Google Inc. (GOOG) (GOOG)’s year-end party with regard to staffers and visitors in New York. “A lot of performances are coming my method now,” Hempton stated. “Some of these contacts look like they’re likely to be regular customers.”
Launched in 2006 in New Orleans, Music for Tomorrow’s on the internet booking service initially assisted local music artists find work after Storm Katrina brought cultural existence to a dead stop. As it gradually expanded it’s service to New York last year, Anthony DeFeo, an investor at the Manhattan-based Exis Funds Management Inc., became the organization’s professional director on the part-time basis.
“We’ve made a way for individuals to book occasions, and we’re distributing awareness of brighten music by creating opportunities for musicians,” said DeFeo, 28, a Utica, New York native who played alto saxophone in high school.
