The poker career of Joran van der Sloot | Online Poker Bonus

Poker News·

Now Joran van der Sloot has been arrested in Chile and is going to trial in Peru, we hear many stories about his alleged poker career. Not very strange seeing he got caught when he was on his way to a Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) Event, hosted by PokerStars. According to some media he would be addicted to poker, according to others he was a celebrated professional and others even said he committed the murder because of the excitement of winning and losing thousands of dollars on the poker tables (this was actually said in the Peruvian media).

So, what about the real poker qualities of Joran van der Sloot? As the Sherlock Holmes of the poker world Marawa Poker Club investigates the matter, and tries to find out if Joran maybe can earn some nice extra pocket money playing card games against his fellow prisoners in Peru…

In the beginning of 2008, Dutch crime fighter Peter R. de Vries had Joran van der Sloot make a confession on a hidden camera talking about his role in the disappearance of Nathalee Holloway. During the investigation de Vries made some shots of Joran playing poker in a casino and the media went nuts over it. A big dutch newspaper wrote van der Sloot would be a heavy poker addict because he played over 200 online poker tournaments in 2007. A strange observation in the eyes of seasoned poker players, as a tournament pro easily plays over 200 online poker tournaments a week!

The first known poker results of Joran van der Sloot date from 2006, and that also was the year he made a player profile on PocketFives.com. From that profile we know that his favorite poker hand is , and that his favorite poker player is Annette ‘Annette15 “Obrestadt. So we now know that there áre females Joran does have respect for..

Based on statistics from the two biggest poker statistics websites, officialpokerrankings.com and pokertableratings.com, we can see how van der Sloot performed on the virtual poker tables. It should be noted that although it is generally accepted that the screen names belong to Joran van der Sloot, this is never officially confirmed. However, we can say with great certainty that Joran has played under the screen names “AANOTILTKK” (Party Poker) and “angryshark68″ (Pokerstars). He also played under the screen name “angryshark68″ on Ultimate Bet, “Joran9″ on Titan Poker and with the name “pokerpro68of” on Full Tilt Poker. The results of these last three names are negligible because he either hardly played on those accounts, or the results are not known. We exclude them from our investigation.

2006

In 2006 van der Sloot played on Party Poker, where he played only 24 tournaments. Apparently he did not think about bankroll management because he played tournaments with buy-ins of $2 while at the same time playing the $200,000 Guaranteed on PartyPoker with a buyin of $215. He did finish in the money however in the latter, finishing 39th good for $862. Van der Sloot ended the year 2006 slightly under break-even.

2007

In 2007, the much discussed Dutchman played mostly on Party Poker and Pokerstars. On PartyPoker, he obtained some pretty good results under the screen name “AANOTILTKK. He won $ 13,190 in prize money that year and had a ROI (Return On Investment, the buy-ins paid versus the prize money earned) of 40%. His best result was the first place in a $33 rebuy tournament for $4,777. On PokerStars, van der Sloot played with the screen name “angryshark68″. There he lost he little for the year and in 59 tournaments he took a negative return on investment of 66%. Summed up, van der Sloot did not do bad at all in tournaments in 2007 and showed a nice profit. The cash games results of Joran are not tracked until 2009, but more on that later.

2008

2008 was a year van der Sloot apparently did not play poker much (busy with other things?). Under the screen name “AANOTILTKK” he played 18 tournaments on PokerStars. In these tournaments he cashed for a total of $3,545, while he paid $1,477 in buy-ins. As a result he made an ROI of 71% for the year. Again not too bad, although there is obviously not thát much to say about such a small sample size.

2009

2009 was a very good poker year for Joran. He started the year with a fifth place in the $300K Guaranteed on PartyPoker. It dragged him officially a grand prize of $13.800. I say officially, because at the final table a deal was made and the amount van der Sloot won is probably a little higher than 5th place money. In total he played 64 tournaments on PartyPoker in 2009, where he finished in the money ten times. Taken together he won $21,066 and spend $12,686 in buy-ins. So, again a good performance.

Since the beginning of 2009 his cash game results are also tracked and van der Sloot performed considerably less in that area. In the first months of 2009 he played a lot of cash games on Party -20,330 hands- and he lost a total sum of $3,792. He played mostly Limit Holdem up to $10/$20 limits. The largest pot he won was worth more than $1,800 and was played on a $5/$10 No Limit Hold’em table on -how romantic- Valentine’s Day 2009. You can see the hand here if you’re using a (free) account on pokertableratings.com. Despite of this big pot, he still lost nearly $ 4,000 in cash games in 2009.

Live Poker

It seems that van der Sloot is no longer playing online poker since March 2009. However, in 2010 he still played live poker though, judging by the stories from the casinos in South America. He had also planned to play in the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) Event in Lima, Peru before he was arrested in Chile. It is said that the entry fee for the tournament was paid directly with money received from the FBI. This money he received for the information he gave them about the location of the body of Natalee Holloway (source: New York Post). About what he has done in terms of poker over the past years is largely unknown.

On the security cams you can see him in action at the poker tables at the Atlantic City Casino in Miraflores, Peru:

Conclusion

At the beginning of this article it has already been mentioned that Joran van der Sloot has been given different qualifications by the media. According to some he was a poker addict, for others he was a poker genius and in some media publications Joran was a ‘heavy losing poker player’. In this article we have tried to honestly reflect the poker skills of Joran. Our findings show that, as is often the case, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. He played not enough for being a ‘poker addict’, he won too much for a ‘heavy losing player and a ‘poker genius’ would also be an exaggeration on the other hand. We keep it on a fairly skilled poker player with some good results. This will certainly be enough though to win some packs of cigarets from his fellow Peruvian inmates with a game of Texas Hold’em poker..
