Freeroll Strategy – 5 great tips
Freeroll Strategy
Freerolls are still one of the top ways for (new) players to build their bankroll without making a deposit. If handled well, and played with the right strategy, a player will be able to win nice amounts of money without risking any money of his own. Check out our list of 5 great tips for handling freerolls, listed below.
1. Be patient
You are not the only one that’s going for free money. Freerolls attract a huge amount of players. Many of these people won’t take the tournament seriously, so they’ll go All-In on every hand until they’re bust. You may be surprised by how often it happens that it’s not the strongest hand that stays up in a pot. The chance of winning for an A/K vs. 7/2 is 67% vs. 33%, which means that a hand like the Ace King looses once out of every three times! And, during the freerolls you’ll probably experience a great deal of bad beats, but remember one important lesson – in the end, the better player always wins. Just play a new freeroll (there are always new ones starting) and get back to it with renewed energy.
2. Play as many freerolls as possible
Remember that there’s a huge run on freerolls but there are also a lot of bad players and people that are not playing seriously. By making sure that you focus on each and every freeroll that you join and by making sure that you play your best game, you’ll have an increased chance of beating your opponents. Of course, you’ll also need some pure luck to win a freeroll, no matter how great a player you are. However, you can increase your chances of winning by joining as many freerolls as possible.
3. Start off tight
The beginning of a freeroll can be a virtual battlefield. Many players will play recklessly because they didn’t have to pay a buy-in fee for the tournament and they’ll try to win as much chips as possible, as quickly as possible. Be clever and play your hands tight in the beginning, play the right hands and leave the bluffing to the other players. Most players tend not to fold in the beginning so a bluff will be called – make sure your bluff is not hot air.
4. Pay attention to players that are ’sitting out’
Out of the huge amount of players that register for freerolls, a lot of players don’t show up behind their screen and run the tournament in auto mode. You can recognize these players because they are marked as “sit out”. They will play their blinds but are not there to defend them, which means free chips for you. Be careful that you don’t overdo it though; some people get tangled in raising wars over the blinds. Before you know it, you can have your entire chip stack on the table while you’re holding a mediocre hand.
5. Be focused on changing game dynamics
Most freerolls are a free-for-all at the beginning of the tournament. But, as soon as a lot of players have been eliminated and the prize money is in sight, the game starts to change. Some players suddenly go into lock down and won’t play a single hand, while the blinds increase rapidly. Stay aware and focus on the changes in game dynamics. As soon as you notice that more and more players are getting tight, start playing more hands. When people are still playing the pots but fold as soon as the bets get higher, hammer them with a raise.
Hopefully the above tips will help you earn some free cash in a successful way. One thing that’s most important to remember is to be patient. With the huge amounts of freeroll players and the fast levels, you will need a lot of luck. But, by applying these 5 tips, you can significantly increase your chances of winning!
