The rescue of 33 Chilean mine workers has made for a significant dip in online poker and casino traffic last week. According to various sources traffic slowed down significantly when the live streams of the rescue were shown on TV. The rescue mission saved 33 miners that have been trapped in a mine shaft for 69 days in Chile.
According to CNN, which broadcasted the whole rescue operation, more than 1 billion people watched worldwide. CNN also investigated internet behaviour during the broadcasts and spoke to people from the online poker and gambling scene:
“The internet casino I wager at will always be there and I can access it any time, however a gigantic event like the rescue mission in Chile only takes place once in a life time.” Said British Mark Bentle to CNN.
Online poker player Matt Schwarn: “Under normal circumstances I would have been playing in an internet poker tournament before going to work, but on this day I put my gambling efforts in the back burner and watch as history unfolded.”
After the weekend traffic resumed and the online poker sites and casino sites went on with what they were doing already: making boatloads of money..
